XVI TRANSHUMANCIA and Exhibition of Ancient Countryside Tools 6 and 7 SEPTEMBER 2025 in ARANDA DE MONCAYO.

Sentir Rural is committed to transhumance and has been holding this event in Aranda de Moncayo since 2012. It also took place in various municipalities in Aragon, Navarre, and Soria in 2011. For millions of years, humans have practiced transhumance with their livestock. Transhumance is the movement of livestock, twice a year, to summer pastures in highland areas and back to lowland areas (valleys and pastures) to spend the winter. Being a transhumant is more than a form of herding; it is a way of life and a way of feeling a total connection with the cycles of nature and all living things. Transhumance has woven an extensive communication system throughout the Iberian Peninsula, consisting of cattle trails, paths, trails, and streams. At the beginning of this century, these trails still exist, stretching over 125,000 kilometers and 400,000 hectares. Aranda de Moncayo remains a transit point for transhumants, maintaining its active trails. Since its inception, Sentir Rural has worked on various activities involving transhumance and transhumants since 2010, raising awareness of this trade and way of life that is gradually disappearing. Therefore, during these events, we report on the numerous benefits that transhumance provides to both society and the environment, thus maintaining a vibrant biodiversity and the fertility of our soils after its passage. It also controls the growth of bushes, acting efficiently against fires, among many other benefits. Over the course of a weekend, through these educational and interactive events, we will remember those men and women who, through their economic activity for millennia, have contributed to producing quality food and helping to maintain a vibrant ecosystem. In 2016, transhumance was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and since 2023, it has been an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The exhibition of antique implements related to transhumance and farm work is a look back at a not-so-distant past. A delight in the beauty and quality of the handmade tools made with local materials. The exhibition will take place Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th, at the restored farm and stable at the Molino del Batán in Aranda de Moncayo. Being a transhumant is more than just a form of herding; it's a way of life and a way of feeling a total connection with the cycles of nature and all living things.

Transhumance has woven an extensive communication system throughout the Iberian Peninsula of livestock trails, divided into ravines, cordeles, veredas, and lava flows that still exist at the beginning of this century, covering 125,000 kilometers and 400,000 hectares.

Aranda de Moncayo remains a transit point for transhumants, maintaining its active trails. Since its inception, Sentir Rural has worked on various activities involving transhumance and transhumants since 2010, raising awareness of this trade and way of life that is slowly disappearing.

For this reason, during these sessions, we reported on the numerous benefits that transhumance provides to both society and the environment, thus maintaining biodiversity and the fertility of our soils after their passage. It also controls the growth of brush, effectively combating fires , among many other benefits.

Over the course of a weekend, through these educational and interactive sessions, we will remember those men and women who, over millennia, have contributed through their economic activity to producing quality food and helping to maintain a vibrant ecosystem.
